History of the Women Parliamentary Caucus in KP (2016–2025)

Women Parliamentary Caucus was established in the Provincial Assembly of KhyberPakhtunkhwa in the first PTI-led government through a joint resolution passed by the Assembly in 2015 supported by women legislators across party lines, including Nagina Khan, Rashida Riffat, Nargis Ali, Romana Jalil, and Zareen Riaz, and it was formally inaugurated in April, 2016 under a vision to create a just and inclusive society in KP where women’s rights are respected, protected, and promoted through effective legislation and policy-making.
The KP Women Parliamentary Caucus aimed to create a unified platform for women legislators to collaborate on advancing gender equality and women’s rights in the province. It was formally established to serve as a cross-party platform for women legislators. Its primary aim is to empower women parliamentarians, enhance their legislative and oversight capacities, and promote gender-responsive governance in the province. Since its inception, the WPC has focused on:

    • Enhancing women’s representation and participation in parliamentary processes.
    • Influencing policy frameworks with a gender perspective.
    • Building capacity among women legislators through trainings, exposure visits, and workshops.
    • Promoting a rights-based approach in legislation and oversight.
    • Promote women-friendly legislation and work collectively for cause of women in the province.
    • Create awareness about the role and achievements of women parliamentarians.
    • Monitor implementation of laws affecting women and marginalized groups.
    • Serve as a bridge between the legislature and civil society organizations working on women protection and empowerment.
    • The Caucus also works for the creation of policies and institutions that will support the country’s overall agenda of women empowerment, poverty eradication and social protection.
